Nicole’s post brought forward the stark reality that recent events in our facilities have stirred an interest in journalistic desire to look at our members for unknown reason(s). We have learned from past experience that journalists utilize our rosters to focus their journalist investigations on members they believe may further whatever story they are working to develop. These journalists are adept at navigating social media, including content we believe is “private”, and almost certainly have and are looking through the various social media accounts used by us. Past experiences have shown us that our posts, and posts that we “like”, may draw unwanted attention and subject us to further scrutiny.
Please take a few moments to go through your various social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) and lock it down by removing any posts that could provide personal information, or be used in some way to show or insinuate impropriety in any way.
Finally, as a reminder, we are prohibited from providing any statements pertaining to MCSO without authorization from the sheriff, through the communications unit. It is not unheard of for journalists to approach members directly, and even give the impression that they are “authorized” to talk to you. If MCSO is going to authorize you to talk to any journalist, you will be contacted by a member of the communications unit directly. The best way to protect you, should you be contacting by any journalist, is to refer them to the MCSO Communications Unit.
Please don’t hesitate to contact any e-board member if you have any questions or concerns.
Respectfully,
John
