Court Services Voluntary Overtime

MCSO has hired the first two retirees in their effort to supplement staffing and potentially alleviate mandatory overtime. This was a component of our contract negotiations which was implemented in our current collective bargaining agreement that was ratified, covering 2022 – 2025.
The wording of our contract specified that all efforts to fill the available overtime for the full shift, including all calls for 8 hours, 7th day overtime and 8 hour VMOTs must be exhausted PRIOR to hiring a retiree. Even if a retiree is hired, after completing all of the requirement, they can be bumped by a MCCDA member who is taking a full shift.
One of the complexities with the hiring process is specific to the filling of Court Services Unit (CSU) overtime. Currently the CSU sergeant fills overtime many days in advance, sometimes necessitated by a pending weekend. The complexity is created by a VOT process that is not monitored on the evenings or weekends, and all calls have traditionally not been completed at either MCDC or MCIJ in order to capture CSU qualified members assigned in the facilities.
MCCDA is working to ensure that the correct process is followed, and any CSU certified member is given the opportunity to work overtime prior to the hiring of a retiree. In the meantime, Sgt. Roldan has asked that members who wish to PC, or who have PC’d but not yet hired for the available CSU shift, contact him directly either by text or phone call. If the member is attempting to be hired more than 7.5 hours prior to the shift, and cannot reach Sgt. Roldan, please contact the MCDC OIC’s office directly and explain that you are calling to take available CSU overtime. Also, Sgt. Roldan asked us to get the word out that if you are interested in being trained to work at the courthouse and be eligible for CSU overtime, please send him an email at juan.roldan@mcso.us .
Please remember that members CANNOT work a shift at the courthouse in-lieu of there regularly assigned shift in the facilities in order to bump a retiree.
Thank you for you help as we work to ensure our members right to work overtime in these highly desirable posts. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter, please reach out directly to any member of the e-board.
